In the beautiful Great Lakes region sits an unassuming crossroad. It is though this Crossroad that the work between the Hedge is done, and from it birthed the Hare, and the Toad - two beloved creatures of the in-between, known trickster figures, and notorious Witches' Familiars.
Cedar & Rosemary - Freya's Story
It started with a potion brewed in the sunlight. There was once a not-quite-girl who let herbs sit in sunlight. Drinking of the bloom of the Earth, they learned the mysteries of magic and sorcery.
They didn't realize what they had tapped into, until they had started creating more, learning more about the plants and the trees around them. There was once a Cedar Tree growing in the park, it was unassuming, but they knew — take these fronds, bundle them up and burn them. This was the ethos of their magic — curiosity, and a willingness to experiment.
The Cattails - Melora's Story
Before there was anything, there was a nine-year-old behind their house, tearing cattails apart with their bare hands. Not for a school project. Not because anyone told her to. Because something in her bones said: make a bed at the water's edge.
She didn't know then that the woods had a name - that the air between the trees was a threshold, that the cattail fluff she scattered was an offering, that the presence they felt watching her was Hermes, marking the path they'd walk decades later. She just knew the fluff was soft. The water was patient. The space between the yard and the trees felt more real than the house behind them.
The Hare & The Toad
The Hare is the messenger - crossing fields at twilight, visible and vanishing. The Toad is the guardian - living under the doorstep, slow and patient, knowing who comes and goes before you do. Running through the thicket, they discovered each other through the threads of fate. Their magic flowing between them synergistically.
Through this learning of each other, they fell in love. The Hare and the Toad are the Guardians of this Threshold, guarding, guiding, and teaching us always. Together they are the complete threshold: the speed to cross it and the patience to guard it. The going and the staying. The hare's foot and the toad's stone.
"The hare crosses the threshold at dawn.
The toad guards it through the night.
Both know the door swings both ways."
